courgettes

We got these round, grenade-like courgettes (zucchini to our American friends) in France at the weekend - going to make stuffed courgettes this week. The interesting and frankly surprising thing about the fruit and veg aisle in the supermarket there was that the vast majority of produce was grown in France. The only item I saw from outside were the strawberries from Spain. Even the kiwi fruit was French-grown (I naively thought that New Zealand had that market cornered :) Very different to the UK, where it's hard to find UK-grown produce. I think it's something to do with consumers being led into expecting to buy fruit and veg out of season. Makes you think just how far your dinner has travelled.
